Search Engines
Search engines are crawler or spider-based search
engines creating listings automatically. They "crawl" or
"spider" the web regularly and produce results for
Internet users to search through. The websites that
appear at the top of the list are ranked more relevant
to the search term(s) the user input, and the websites
that appear at the bottom of the page are ranked less
relevant to those search terms.
Inktomi and Google are typical search engines.
However Inktomi does not have a front-end web search
facility but instead supplies the technology that powers
many search engines such as Hotbot and About and many other companies. Google on
the other hand has its own front-end web search and it
is also a supplier of search technology. For example
Yahoo's search results primarily come from Google and
then from its own directory. Yahoo is therefore a
typical hybrid between a directory and a search engine.
Most recently Yahoo purchased Inktomi, which will make Yahoo stronger in the search industry.
Changes to your web site design, layout, keywords and
metatags can make a big difference in your search engine
listing. Since your website is crawled by the search
engine spiders every time you submit to them this
provides a great opportunity to tweak your websites's
ranking. Simply by changing or adding keywords or
perhaps even changing the layout of your webpages may
get you a higher position. Remember keywords and
metatags are "food" for spiders, so make them "tasty"!
However keep in mind that search engine spiders like Google's crawl the web roughly once a month. So it will take some time before you will see any changes to your ranking. To speed the process you can pay most search engines to include your URL more quickly. Usually within 48 hours to one week. This is called paid inclusion. Global Promote offers this service as Priority Search Engine Placement.
Human-powered
Directories
Human-powered directories, or just directories, are
often broadly described as being search engines. However
the main difference between a real search engine and a
directory is that a directory depends on humans to add
websites to their database whereas search engine spiders
add URLs automatically. When directories have enough
websites for a category and it is "full" more categories
and subcategories are created. There are thousands of
directories on the web today and many of them specialize
in particular subject areas. When you submit a web site
to a directory it is usually accompanied with a short
description of the web site and some keywords that best
describe the website's content. The directory editors
then review the site by visiting it on the web and then
add it to their category. In some cases they may even
create a new category or subcategory. Usually listings appear in alphabetical order but you may also have the possibility to pay a small subscription fee to be listed at the top. This may be an option if the category you are submitting to already has a long list of URLs and your business name starts with eg. S. However web directories can list URLs in many ways. For example Google runs it's own web directory and lists URLs by Google PageRank order.
Techniques that are useful for improving URL ranking
with a search engine have nothing to do with improving
one in a directory. Therefore changes to your web site
will have no effect on your listing. However a good site
with good content may receive a higher ranking when
initially reviewed by editors. Some directories list
URLs based on alphabetical order.
Search Engine News
Recent events are changing the search engine
business! Google and Inktomi are the major suppliers of
search technology and Yahoo is Internet's #1 brand and
portal and directory. Yahoo currently uses Google
technology for its primary results but because it
recently acquired Inktomi it will most probably,
sometime in the near future, switch from drawing results
from Google to Inktomi. How does this effect your
website ranking? Well, it will naturally have effect to
your current listing because Inktomi's spider may very
well list a URL differently than Google's!
The average time to get listed on search engines are
very long! For example some popular search engines take
several weeks to list a URL, for example MSN up to 2
months, Google up to 4 weeks, Excite up to 6 weeks, and
HotBot up to 2 months. Our customers simply cannot wait
that long and this is why we offer paid guaranteed
inclusion, which has obvious benefits such as the 48
hour refresh for keeping your website always up-to-date
regardless of the changes in the search engine
business.
We suggest that you run our free Free Meta Tag
Generator as often as required to tweak your
keywords and then visit our Priority Search Engine
Placement to get your website listed as fast as in
48 hours!
